Are all garden centres
the same?
We at Palmers like to
think that we are different. Our outside plant area is maybe smaller
than some garden centres, but it
is bursting with a
very good, extensive
selection of
well-known shrubs, trees and climbers, plus the occasional
not-so-well-known variety.
We offer real choice for the novice and
discerning gardener alike, all
set in a friendly atmosphere,
and backed up by helpful and knowledgeable staff…

…whatever the weather!

During Winter, many shrubs start to come into their own. The
Dogwoods are well known for their bright Winter stems in shades of
yellow, pinkish-red, scarlet and deep purple-black. Plant in groups to
achieve stunning Winter effects, particularly when planted with the pure white stems of Silver Birch, or a background of dark, evergreen shrubs.
Evergreen shrubs are invaluable in the Winter garden, with plants
available to suit all soil
types and garden sizes, from the bright gold
of Choisya 'Sundance', a perfect small garden plant, to the large,
glossy foliage of Fatsia japonica, which excels in those difficult,
shady spots of the garden. Many forms of Viburnum come into their own in
Winter, with Viburnum 'Eve Price' being one of the loveliest, producing
its scented flowers throughout Winter into Spring. Viburnum x
bodnantense 'Dawn' is also a beautiful shrub, producing its
sweetly-scented, pink flowers throughout Winter.
Many
climbing plants start to do their thing in Winter, with evergreen
varieties of Clematis, Winter-flowering Jasmine and variegated Ivies all
providing flower and foliage interest through the Winter months.
Clematis cirrhosa carries pretty, bell-shaped flowers in mild spells
throughout Winter, in shades of white and pink, often with attractive
spots and speckles. Clematis armandii is the king of the evergreen
clematis, with large, glossy foliage, followed in early Spring by masses
of fragrant, white flowers. Many
of the variegated forms of Ivy provide excellent foliage interest in
Winter, whether covering the ground, or climbing up a wall or fence. We
feel we have the best range of climbers in the local area, often at
better prices than our competitors.
Flowers are hard to come by in the Winter garden, so plants which do
flower at this time of year are to be cherished. Winter-flowering
Heathers are excellent, as are plants such as Sarcococca (Christmas
Box), Witch Hazel and Mahonia japonica. |

Many
ornamental trees come into their own in the Autumn and Winter months,
with varieties for both Autumn colour, Winter berries and attractive
bark. Sorbus and Cotoneaster forms are by far the best for providing
Winter berries, in a myriad of colours from white through to deepest
red. Bark can provide wonderful Winter colour, from the pure white of
Silver Birch, to the dark red, striped bark of the 'Snakebark' Maples.
Prunus serrula, the Tibetan Cherry, has beautiful, mahogany-red, peeling
bark, stunning in the low rays of the Winter sun.
We also carry a wide
range of Spring and Summer interest trees, and Autumn is a perfect time
to plant these trees for spectacular results in Spring. |
  There
are many shrubs and trees that bloom in the Spring, some even before the
new leaves form. One of the best of these is Amelanchier, which is
covered in pure white blooms just before the copper-tinged, new leaves
open out. Also, there are several varieties of Prunus, with
flowers ranging from white to the darkest pink, and leaf colour from
green to deepest burgundy.
An easy-to-grow shrub is Viburnum, consisting of many varieties that
produce
colour all year round, either with Spring or Summer flowers, or Autumn
berry and leaf colour. Some of the flowers are highly-scented.
The height of Summer has
the drought-loving Lavenders and Cistus giving us a show of colour for
many months.
Hebes
are beautiful, evergreen shrubs covered in flower spikes that attract
the bees and butterflies, as do the prolific flowers of Buddleia. For
scented flowers in the Summer months, there are the beautiful, white,
single or double flowers of Philadelphus, otherwise known as the Mock
Orange.
 Climbers
are invaluable in giving a backdrop to the border, and covering trellis
and unsightly fences. Many
varieties are suitable for the patio if grown in a large pot.
Clematis montana is one of
the early-flowering species, followed by the large-flowered Clematis,
which give a stunning display throughout the Summer; some varieties
flowering in May/June and giving a show of flowers again in late Summer.
We have some choice
collections in stock, with multi-buy offers on some fantastic Clematis
that are ideal for growing on the Patio. |
