As
the weather cools down in Autumn, many perennials start to die down for
the Winter, but there are many plants that thrive in the Winter months.
Hellebores are the classic Winter perennial, their tough, leathery
leaves lasting all Winter, topped with gorgeous flowers in every colour
imaginable, from purest white to deepest purple-black.
Helleborus niger, the Christmas Rose, is often the earliest to
flower, its pure white flowers a welcome sight on frosty mornings. The
most spectacular flowers are produced by the orientalis hybrids,
now available in a huge range of colours; there are even sumptuous,
double forms available. |

Many people believe that grasses are only suitable for sunny, dry
areas, but we have varieties which thrive in shady, moist areas, and
provide excellent foliage contrasts to other plants such as Heuchera and
Ferns.
We
have tall, airy forms, such as Miscanthus and Stipa, which are superb
for adding height and movement to borders, and are an excellent way of
adding evergreen structure to the Winter garden. We also have a wide
range of smaller, evergreen forms such as Carex testacea, Carex
'Evergold' and Festuca 'Elijah Blue', which provide wonderful colour and
form to both the Summer and Winter garden. |

Many
varieties of Euphorbia look good during Winter, but one in particular
stands head and shoulders above the rest: Euphorbia 'Silver Swan' has
very attractive, cream variegated foliage, which really stands out in
the Winter garden. Plant with Bergenia and evergreen Grasses for
striking effects. |
